In a truly tragic and heart-breaking incident, a 10-year-old girl was killed, while two others were seriously hurt when a car ploughed into them while they waited for their transport to school.

The incident occurred in Kota Belud, about 70km from Kota Kinabalu.

Max Christty, a student of SK Tempasuk 2, died on the spot due to head injuries sustained in the accident that occurred at the Kg Tempasuk 2 road in Kg Rinig at about 6.40am today.

Two others – a 14-year-old secondary student Michelle Marianne David, 14, from SMK Pekan 1 Kota Belud, and seven-year-old Maxryona Masdi, are in critical condition with head injuries.

They were initially treated at the Kota Belud district hospital, before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth  Hospital here.

It is believed that the farmer, who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, was on his way home when he drove off the road and crashed into the three students before landing into the compound of a house in the area.

According to The Star, the farmer apparently escaped with light injuries and was given outpatient treatment. He has been detained for questioning by police.
