This looks like something which was done in bad taste and without taking into consideration the repercussions.

Even celebrities have now waded into the controversy over clothing retailer H&M's monkey hoodie.

The retailer ran a product photo featuring a black boy in a hoodie with the words "coolest monkey in the jungle" emblazoned on the front.

The hoodie, which was sold in the clothing chain's UK stores, sparked a social media backlash. Consumers called for a boycott of H&M and for an investigation into it.

"We sincerely apologise for this image," H&M said.

"It has been removed from all online channels and the product will not be for sale in the United States. We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do, and will be reviewing our internal routines."

Canadian R&B star The Weeknd has said he is cutting ties with H&M after being "deeply offended" by the photo. The singer-songwriter, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, previously teamed up with the Swedish fashion retailer to release special edition menswear collections.

NBA star LeBron James joined the chorus of criticism. "Enough about y'all and more about what I see when I look at this photo," James wrote. "I see a Young King!! The ruler of the world, an untouchable Force that can never be denied."
