An elderly woman, believed to have been abused by her children was rescued from the Desa Wawasan Flats in Bukit Mertajam.

The 64-year-old victim was found in the locked unit about 1pm by police after neighbours informed them.

Police said initial investigations revealed bruises all over her body and head.

Police have since recorded statements from bother her 32-year-old son and 35-year-old daughter, while her 28-year-old daughter-in-law was also questioned.

"We believe all the problems started due to poverty and there was not enough food to eat.

"However, the victim refuses to admit she was beaten and claims she had a bad fall.

"We also found that the children involved were not of sound mind and would need psychiatric help," added police.
