A MAN in Tawau yesterday morning hijacked a Nissan Frontier using a 58-cm long parang along Jalan Tanjung Batu Darat. He drove off the vehicle, thinking that he had struck gold.

But barely a few minutes later, the vehicle ran out of petrol, forcing the hijacker to abandon the vehicle.

Not satisfied, the hijacker robbed a man of his Modenas GT motorcycle in Jalan Tawau Lama, also using the same parang .

This time the victim cried for help and passers by gave chase. Fleeing from the mob, the hijacker rode the motorcycle and sought refuge in the most unlikely place: the Tawau police station!

Tawau district police chief Peter Umbuas said the suspect was detained by the police at 8.10am, 20 minutes after attempted motorcycle hijack.

"The victim asked for help from passersby to chase the suspect, but the suspect, who had hijacked his motorcycle, managed to evade them until he entered the grounds of the Tawau police station and was detained with his parang,” he said in a statement, Bernama reported.

Initial investigation revealed that he used the same modus operandi for both robberies, by brandishing the parang to force the victims to stop and hijacking their vehicles to make his escape,” he said.

He added that the suspect had previously been detained four times since 2014 for drug abuse.
