Recently, prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad once again reminded us on the importance of the English language.

He said speaking English does not make one less Malay or Malaysians, but is necessary as the language is used worldwide.

I agree 100 per cent with Dr Mahathir and certainly, the languages you learn does not affect the person you really are.

As a parent, I encourage my children to learn as many languages as possible, but that does not mean I ask them to neglect their mother tongue.

As Malaysians, we must know how to speak Bahasa Malaysia, but we must also remember that the world is borderless and relying on one language alone is not going to get us far.

Dr Mahathir is certainly right in stressing on the importance of English and from what I recall, the premier has been saying this a long time.

If we are to compete in the global arena, we must equip ourselves with a good command of English, there is no two ways about that.
