I recently read the EPF's expenditure guide, BelanjawanKu where it stated that RM1,870 was sufficient for a single person who gets by using public transport.

Well, maybe the figure was acceptable about 5 to 6 years ago, but certainly not today.

As a single guy living in the Klang Valley, my rental alone is RM400 a month for a small room in Petaling Jaya.

Travelling to and from work each day using bus and MRT costs me about RM10 daily and up to RM20 if it rains.

This adds up to about RM300 - RM400 per month.

For these two alone, I spend about RM800 which would mean I am left with only about RM1,100.

What about sending money to our folks, food, bills etc...

For me, I would safely say even a single person needs about RM2,500 to live in the Klang Valley.

Maybe RM1,870 would be sufficient if you stay in a much smaller town and can walk to and from work.

But, certainly not in the Klang Valley.

Also, RM6,620 for a married couple with two kids is ridiculous.

My brother is married with two children and even with their RM15,000 a month joint income, they are suffering.

The cost of rental, two cars, insurance, kindergarten etc will kill you.

I don't know about you guys, but for me, the EPF guide seems pretty unrealistic.
