Rais criticizes Violet Yong’s speech

MIRI: Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim today criticized the DAP candidate for Pending, Violet Yong, who was said to have delivered a speech with racial undertone while campaigning.

He said Malaysians should not raise racial sentiments even though they were desperate to gain votes from a particular race.

“We will have the impression that Violet is prejudiced and all sincere Malaysians in Sarawak should also do away with such prejudice for the sake of the Land of the Hornbills and for the sake of our future harmony,” he told reporters after having lunch, here today.

Violet’s statement at a closed-door function was quoted by the blog ‘mukapetang.blogspot’ in Hokkien which was translated as “why should the Melanau only rule Sarawak?”

However, he was convinced that the Chinese community would not be easily influenced by the speech and would vote wisely in the 10th Sarawak state election tomorrow. – Bernama
