KOTA KINABALU: Descendants of the Sulu sultanate have denied any responsibility for the burning of the Sabah state flags in Lahad Datu.

Datu Mudarasulail Kiram who acted as a spokesman for the families of the sultanate described the incident as disrespectful to Sabah.

“It is not in our culture to burn flags. I believe those involved in the incident had other motives and they made up the claim they were descendants of the Sulu Sultan,” said Mudarasulail, a local businessman.

He said the group’s action of burning six Sabah flags on Saturday was aimed at damaging the reputation of the real descendants of the Sulu sultan.

Following the incident police, arrested 12 people and Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman has also condemned the incident and asked the police to provide a comprehensive report on the matter as the Sabah claim was no longer an issue.

Mudarasulail said that he too hoped that the police would conduct a thorough investigation on the case to find out what the group was up to.

On the group waving a yellow flag with a lion insignia, he said that the flag had nothing to do with the Sulu sultanate.

Those arrested were aged between 14 and 44 years and are still under police remand pending investigations for illegal assembly and other offences.
