Not many know that kolam, the beautiful piece of Indian art that normally gets drawn and displayed during festive holidays and special occasions, can be quite a painstaking effort.

The ones that we are accustomed to seeing in Malaysia are the ones normally drawn on floors, but have you seen one that floats on water?

With Deepavali around the corner, the Shangri-La's Golden Sands Resort in Batu Feringgi did just that, producing a majestic looking drawing that has made it into the Malaysian Book of Records (MBR) as the Biggest Floating Kolam.

Using the resort's swimming pool, more than 100 volunteers from the hotel itself, the Penang Hindu Association and Inti College, Penang took 117 hours to complete the drawing.

They spent 10 days planning the artwork and another nine completing the 638.02 square metre kolam, the Star  reported.

The team used 87 bags of desiccated coconut flakes, 37.9kg of sticker glue, 47 pieces of polystyrene and 5,000 bulbs of fresh pompon chrysanthemums to end up with an amazing piece of artwork.

The kolam, which cost RM25,000, was on display until yesterday and has been removed.

Watch a video this magnificent display and the effort that made it happen.
