One worker with a company in charge of maintenance works for the Penang Second Bridge died while another is fighting for his life in hospital after they were mowed down by a vehicle while on duty on the bridge early today.

The driver fled after crashing into them, reports say.

It is learnt that the incident was caught on CCTV.

According to early reports, the victims were sweeping parts of the bridge when the vehicle ploughed into them.

The impact was so strong that both men were flung over the bridge and landed some 20 feet down on the sandbanks of the bridge pillars.

The victim who died, identified as only Rosli for now, died on the way to the Sungai Bakap hospital while his colleague was rushed to the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

His condition is reported to be critical.

Over on social media, netizens expressed outrage at the driver responsible for not stopping to help the victims.

They warned him that he can’t hide for long.

“Where are you going to run, it’s all caught on CCTV and you will face the consequences,” one netizen said.

Those who knew Rosli, who is from Padang Serai, Kedah, also sent their condolences and described him as a kind and humble man who did not deserve such a death.

“Justice must be served for Abang Rosli’s death and I hope the person responsible will pay a heavy price for what he did,” another said.

Netizens for some time now have been lamenting about how vehicles have been driving above the speed limit on the Second Bridge as not many cars use it at night and in the wee hours.
