A social media post by a woman claiming that her toddler nephew suffered bouts of fever, diarrhoea and bloating after he was fed a milk product bought at a supermarket in Kota Kinabalu has become viral recently.

According to 28-year-old Nana, the toddler’s condition became so serious that he was taken to hospital.

When contacted by the New Straits Times, she said that her nephew had consumed the milk product before, with no adverse health effects – which leads her to believe that the most recently-purchased product may be counterfeit.

“My sister bought the milk product in a promotional pack at a supermarket.

“However, my nephew (fell ill and was) sent to hospital (four days ago). (We have since been) advised to report the matter to the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK),” she said today, adding that the family has yet to file an official report.

“(My nephew is back at home today) but his condition has not improved. We might send him back to the hospital for treatment,” Nana added.

Meanwhile, Sabah KPDNKK chief enforcement officer Yahya Sujak said that the department is aware of the viralled claim on social media.

“My men have been in contact with the individual who shared her experience on Facebook, and we have asked her to come in to file a report for us to take further action,” he said.

Yahya, who said that the department has yet to receive the full story regarding the issue, advised anyone else with a similar experience to come forward and report the matter at their nearest KPDNKK office.

“There are still many things that need to be explained to us… We also need to get the milk product sample, as it would be vital as evidence for further investigation,” he added.
