For the past 15 years, I have been making the daily work commute from Bukit Mertajam to the Prai Industrial Park.

I have noticed that for the past few years, too many road accidents have been occurring on the roads leading these factories.

Many of these victims are motorcyclists, as they make up the majority of those who work in the industrial area.

And most times, they die horrible deaths after collisions with heavy vehicles such a container lorries and tankers.

I myself have lost a number of colleagues, and it’s really sad when most times it is not through no fault of theirs.

I have noticed that these heavy vehicles tend to speed a lot.

It’s always a risky gamble when you are riding beside a speeding lorry.

On many occasions, I have seen some drivers blatantly beating the red light, while some others brake at the very last minute because they were speeding and could not stop in time.

They have been cases of motorcyclists in the factory area being mowed down at the traffic lights by these speeding lorries.

Every single day, in the social media or by word of mouth we hear of such accidents in our area and also other industrial parks on the mainland and on the island.

My question is why are these heavy vehicles speeding in a below 90km/h zone?

As it is, we motorcyclists are dwarfed by these large vehicles. It is very rare people like us survive when we get mowed down by them.

These are precious lives, people with spouses, parents, children and siblings.

Some of whom are breadwinners of the family.

I hope the JPJ and police can do something about this situation here.

Why is it that we hardly hear of these lorries and tankers not being hauled up for speeding or reckless driving?

I lost another colleague last month, and he was just planning to settle down and start a family.

This madness has to stop. Precious lives are at stake.
