Please make way when you hear the siren

I remember when I took my driving license in 1987, the officers at the Road Transport Department stressed the importance of having to make way for emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire engines.

We were told that when these vehicles have their sirens on, they are rushing for an emergency situation and we must make way for them.

Any delay, even by seconds, could mean life or death for those in the emergency situation.

However, sadly, till today, I notice many motorists do not seem to realise what a siren means and either remain oblivious or simply prefer to play with their hand-phones when waiting in a queue.

What they don't realise is that someone's life could be hanging on the line and that person could one day be one of their own loved ones.

Drivers need to be alert and aware of their surroundings.

Another awful habit Malaysian motorists have is trying to hitch a ride with the emergency vehicle by tail-gating it through a traffic jam.

This is another dangerous act which must be stopped.

I hope that now with many vehicles installed with on-board cameras, there can be more strict enforcement so that these emergency vehicles can get on their way without all these ignorant, irresponsible drivers making it difficult.
