Time to phase out taxis?

Since Grab and Uber were introduced, I was expecting our local cabbies to up their tempos and improve their services to fight the competition.

Sadly, till today, there does not seem to be any improvement and I still notice them recklessly driving through traffic, driving broken down cars and overcharging every chance they get.

I still notice many of them not using their metres and haggling with customers along the roads.

Rather than working to improve their services, they prefer to harass these e-hailing drivers and create an unnecessary fuss.

Seriously, I think the government should just consider phasing out taxis as using e-hailing services is much more convenient.

Also, there is no hassle of haggling over the fares and there are requirements as to the condition of the vehicles used.

I understand many of these cabbies are senior citizens, but that does not give them the right to fleece the people.

The government has schemes where these cabbies can purchase cars to be used in the e-hailing service and I feel they should take up this offer.

Their run down cars are not only uncomfortable and unreliable, they are also a safety hazard.
