The Meteorological Department’s decision to move along with times and upgrade its myCuaca smartphone application is a timely effort.

The last few weeks have seen some really freak weather patterns going on in the country, resulting in severe floods up north and bad flash floods in some other urban areas as well.

With the announcement that the annual North East Monsoon will come into effect beginning Monday until March next year, what Malaysians can do is to make the best preparations.

And that means monitoring not only weather conditions but keeping abreast of developments on the ground as well.

MET has certainly learnt from past episodes, especially during the devastating East Coast floods in 2014.

I remember there being total chaos in terms of rescue and relief then, and there was very little information coming out of the MOSTI channels.

MET’s new myCuaca smartphone application certainly will help the masses in a big way where fingertip information is concerned.

For those in the dark, the public can get the latest information on weather conditions through this app.

Information on the weather conditions will be uploaded twice a day, at 10 am and 10 pm, and if there any changes, MET will update it immediately to alert the public.

MET’s website, meanwhile, has information among others on rainfall, wind speeds, ultraviolet index and weather forecast.

I have downloaded the app and it looks not too bad.

My only hope that it will deliver when it matters most i.e when there really is a need to rely on it.
