Reading a report that a school in Hulu Langat having allegedly segregated drinking cups for Muslim and non-Muslim students on Thursday really bothered me.

What era are we living in ? The times when I learnt or heard the word segregation was during the apartheid era in South Africa and the Jim Crows laws once applied in the United States.

The Jim Crow laws mandated the segregation of public schools, public places, and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains for whites and blacks.

How was this even possible in our country in 2017, or so I thought ?

We had boycotted the white-ruled South African government then due to this and had taken such bold stands against governments that practice something similar.

It also baffles me as to how Education Ministry through its district level officers had somehow allowed the school to somehow allegedly implement such a divisive policy.

Whatever the circumstances, nothing about it can be justified.

As the country's 60th Merdeka looms, I only hope that the government and its authorities never under any circumstances allow such instances ever again.
