Help our people first. They are also suffering

Very often, we hear of our leaders lending a hand to help the poor and oppressed across the world.

Fine, this is something good and should be praised.

However, for me, it is totally unacceptable when there is still plenty of poverty and suffering right here in our own backyard.

For example, let me highlight a recent article which appeared in a local Malay daily.

It is about this mother, Sarina Musa, 32, and her two children - aged 10 and 5 who live in home that that is in a deplorable state in Kota Baru.

Her eldest son had to drop out of school as they could not afford it, while he also has to stay home to look after his sister when both parents go to work.

When it rains, the roof leaks so terribly that their kids, Khairul Nizam and Mustika Ayuni often fall sick.

Their story is so depressing that my wife cried when she read it in the newspaper.

With such suffering right here, I am still wondering why we have to fly across the world to assist others.

Perhaps, in bigger towns like the Klang Valley, poverty may not be so evident, but it is very prevalent in other parts of the country.

Maybe these leaders are unaware and should take a trip to visit these areas.

Our own Malaysians are badly in need of help and I strongly feel we should focus our efforts here, before looking across our borders.
