Enjoy, but think of the sick, babies and pets too

Enjoy the celebrations and play with firecrackers, but be mindful when and where to do it. Pics for illustration only.

As parents to an eight-month-old baby, and also an owner of a pet dog, we are appealing to those celebrating the festivities soon to be more considerate of their surroundings when they set off firecrackers.

Please go ahead and enjoy the merriment and this includes lighting firecrackers if you must as it is a tradition after all.

But over the years, we have seen what used to be a one-off thing has turned into an all day and all night show of firecrackers might.

This happens not only during Chinese New Year but Hari Raya and Deepavali too.

It has come to a point these days that it feels and sounds as though we are in the midst of a war zone.

The worst part is some do it in the middle of the night when babies, little children and senior citizens and the sick need their proper rest.

Only parents and those who take care of these group of people know how distressing it is to see them restless and disturbed over the loud noise and lack of sleep.

For us young adults, it ,may seem nothing but for babies and pets, the loud noises can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.

It’s a real condition and for dogs at least, the loud noise and smell of exploding firecrackers can cause trauma that led to disorientation and loss of appetite.

Among your neighbours, there are bound to be old people, babies and pets.

Don’t overdo the firecrackers show, especially in the middle of the night and wee hours of the morning.

If we really want to be picky about this, lighting off firecrackers is already illegal in this country.

So, at least try to be more considerate that your neighbourhood is trying to get some rest, peace and quiet, so please keep it to a minimum.
